COUNCIL SEEKS  COMMENTS ON CONSTITUTION
East Gippsland Shire residents will be given the opportunity to comment on proposed changes to the status of Local Government in Victoria.
Shire Mayor Bill Bolitho attended the recent Local Government Constitutional Convention where delegates supported a broad range of recommendations.
'The recommendations covered some extremely important topics, including protection against *the dismissal of Councils, boundary realignment and a recognition of the fact that the primary duly of Local Government is to the ratepayers of the Shire and not to the State Government," Cr Bolitho said
"The massive changes to Local Government since 1994 transferring power away from local Councils and communities to the State Government are an indication of what can happen under the current Constitution.
"This convention was the first time in the history of Local Government in Victoria that Councils have considered such fundamental Constitutional issues. it was all about strengthening the recognition of Local Government in the Constitution and affording it the protection this democratically elected sphere of government deserves.'

East Gippsland Shire passed a resolution at its December 8 meeting, calling for the advertising of the recommendations and encouraging public  submissions by the middle of February 2001.

"The recommendations and a Copy of the Victorian Constitution are available, for community perusal at Council Business and Outreach Centres,' Cr Bolitho said.

“The recommendations already passed at the convention will be taken up by the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) and the Victorian Local Governance Association (VLGA) but the opportunity is there for residents to make submissions either to the Council or to the State Government direct, and we encourage citizens to do so".

Satellite for Faster Internet powered by Satellite Rate Card
Telstra is offering a ’high speed Internet connection via Satellite. The satellite dish will cost $328.90 with a 50% rebate plus a monthly rate , depending on what rate suits you, it will connect you with the ISP of your choice at speeds that have not been seen in this area. Telstra BigPond Broadband powered by Satellite is a “ clip-on “ high speed Internet service which enables you to download at ISDN equivalent or greater speeds in   association with your dial up service. Your dial up services are additional to the  pricing plans for BigPond Broadband  powered by satellite.
Peter Ward (pictured) the CEO of Gippsland Telstra was at Tubbut last week to listen to the      community and was asked why the lines were not up to scratch.
Peter Ward said ‘the lines are good for the area but the POP is not being serviced like it should be‘. It is important the POP is used as  local call access will be lost and  another reason why
more people will not come to this region. Get on board the high speed connection.
The more people who sign up for the connection will reduce the cost of installation.

A demonstration of the satellite will be on offer at the Bendoc Community Centre during January 2001.
